BARCELONA, Spain–Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt capped off the second day of the Mobile World Congress trade show here with a far-ranging and forward-thinking keynote address forecasting a future where increasingly personalized and relevant mobile services transform most every facet of users’ lives. “Smartphones are taking over–smartphone sales surpassed PC sales on a quarterly basis just last week,” Schmidt told a capacity crowd. “The smartphone is the destination for the next generation of games, apps and social connectivity.”

Looking beyond the current mobile marketplace, Schmidt outlined what he called “a serendipity platform–your phone helping you learn new things and meet new people you wouldn’t otherwise meet. Why does my phone not talk to my friend’s phone? Why doesn’t it monitor people who are ill?” Adding he believes very strongly in “the optimism of what we can do with computers and technology,” Schmidt said the accelerated evolution of the Web, mobile and cloud services will ultimately shoulder even greater burdens plaguing everyday life, giving consumers the time and flexibility to spend more time with the people they care about, doing the things they enjoy and making the world a better place. “Computers are here to make us happier,” he asserted.

Schmidt also stressed the increasing role of permission-based personalization solutions, anticipating a future where technology solves human failings spanning from fuzzy memories to boredom.

Shifting his focus to more contemporary mobile industry opportunities, Schmidt said he anticipates substantial breakthroughs in the mobile advertising segment. “Think about the creativity of the commercials you see on TV, and apply that on mobile in a personal way–that’s the next great frontier,” he said. “The display business is fundamentally about telling stories–that produces a better, more relevant ad and a more satisfied consumer. A billion dollar business right in front of us.”

In addition, Schmidt called mobile payment services and Near Field Communications transaction technologies a “mega-scale opportunity,” outlining a scenario where he’s walking down the street in a commercial area. “My phone remembers I need new pants, and it knows ahead of me are two stores–one offering the product at a 20 percent discount, the other offering a 30 percent discount. I enter the store with the bigger discount, the pants are ready, and out I go. You don’t think this is going to work? It should revolutionize electronic commerce and payments. We’re seeing that models around consumerism are working when they’re tied to location and advertising.”

Despite the mobile industry’s myriad innovations, Schmidt cited its capacity to revolutionize life in developing nations as his greatest source of pride. “The future is for the masses, not the elite,” Schmidt stated. “Two billion people we’ve never heard from will enter our conversation in the next three to four years. Because of mobile, it’s possible, and it will change their lives more than it changed any of ours. That’s what I’m proudest of.”

AT&T accelerates LTE deployment, will launch 20 4G devices this year – RealtyGo

AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) will accelerate the deployment of its LTE network, launching LTE markets by mid-year with the entire deployment competed by 2013. In addition, the company will debut 20 4G devices this year. Those devices will use a variety of operating systems including Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 7 and Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, implying that a 4G version of the iPhone is in the works.

AT&T described both HSPA+ and LTE network technologies and said it will be releasing devices that run on both technologies. Recently T-Mobile USA has blurred the lines calling its HSPA+ network and devices “4G.” When T-Mobile did so this past spring, AT&T said that calling HSPA+ “4G” was misleading.

Speaking at the company’s AT&T developer event held here today, AT&T Mobility CEO and President Ralph de la Vega said that recent tax incentives have made it possible to accelerate the company’s LTE deployment as well as expand its backhaul capabilities. Specifically, de la Vega said that the company is equipping its backhaul network with Ethernet and fiber, which will provide network speeds of up to 6 Mbps–what AT&T calls “4G speeds.” He expects that two-thirds of the company’s network traffic will be on the expanded backhaul by year-end.

In October, AT&T Operations CEO John Stankey said at an investor conference that the company would launch commercial LTE service by mid-2011, and will cover between 70 million and 75 million POPs by year-end.

De la Vega also said that AT&T plans to introduce 20 4G devices this year, with HSPA+ devices coming in the first half of the year and LTE devices in the second half of the year. Those LTE devices will include smartphones, USB modems and hot spots and will use a variety of platforms including Android, Windows Phone and iOS. AT&T will launch HSPA+ smartphones that include the Motorola (NYSE:MOT) ATRIX 4G, the HTC Inspire 4G and the Samsung Infuse 4G.

The carrier also said it plans to launch two tablets, including its first LTE tablet, by mid summer. Additional LTE tablets are planned for the second half of the year. The first tablet, running HSPA+, is made by Motorola, has a 10.1-inch screen, runs on Nvidia’s 1 GHz Tegra 2 processor and supports the “Honeycomb” version of Android.

By contrast, Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) has already launched 39 LTE markets, covering 110 million POPs. The carrier currently offers two laptop dongles, and charges $50 per month for 5 GB of LTE data and $80 for 10 GB of data. Verizon is expected to unveil a range of Android smartphones and at least one tablet here for its LTE network.

Google wants to patent mobile commerce

Google owes its success to putting advertising into parts of our lives where no one has ever put adverts before. Now a new patent illustrates the extent of its ambitions.

Last week Google applied to patent one of the cornerstones of mobile commerce – billing by SMS. Details of the invention, entitled “Text message payment”, are scant in the application that was published on Thursday. But US 2007/0203836 does, however, illustrate the extent of Google’s ambitions. It envisages payments for conventional retail shopping (for example at Starbucks or McDonald’s), as well as browser-based surfing, and SMS services such as ringtones.

Now that Text messaging is so natural to everyone with a cellphone, can m-commerce prevail vs the traditional card swipe? what happens if you loose your phone? We can’t wait till the mobile phone can get us dressed and brush our teeth some day.. .
